Building Sustainably: The MOBICCON-PRO project engages key stakeholders in Pirot
On July 10th, 2025 the MOBICCON-PRO consortium convened in Pirot for the conference “Circular Solutions for the Construction Industry”, hosted by the Serbian project partner - the City of Pirot. The event was organized at the National Library and showcased the interim MOBICCON-PRO project’s results, as well as some innovative approaches regarding construction and demolition waste (CDW) management.
The conference provoked strong interest among the local stakeholders and brought together around 70 participants, including representatives of the Ministry of European Integration, the Faculty of Occupational Safety and Environment in Serbia, professors and scientists from the University of Sofia, experts from the Regional Development Agency, representatives of local self-government units and districts, public utility companies, construction companies, design and engineering firms from Pirot, Šabac, Novi Sad, and Belgrade, as well as NGOs and media representatives.
The conference featured a series of expert presentations from key members of the MOBICCON-PRO project consortium. Plamena Nenkova, Deputy Executive Director “International Affairs & Business Development” at Glavbolgarstroy (GBS) presented the interim results of the project, emphasizing on the development of innovative circular solutions for the construction sector within the project. Dr. Stefania Butera from the Danish Technological Institute highlighted the best practices in selective demolition and their role in reducing construction waste at the source. Assoc. Prof. Roumiana Zaharieva from the University of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy introduced the new sustainable construction products developed within MOBICCON-PRO project. Federico Bley from IDEA Consult offered a business perspective on construction and demolition waste recycling in Serbia, outlining key incentives and challenges. Nebojsha Ivanov, Director of the Regional Sanitary Landfill Company in Pirot presented the Serbian case study, focusing on the demonstration and validation of systemic circular solutions, including the MOBICCON-PRO mobile treatment plant.
A key highlight was the discussion around the MOBBICON-PRO mobile plant for the treatment of construction waste, planned to operate in region of Pirot at a later stage of the project. The attendees expressed strong interest in the innovative methods for treatment of construction waste and the functionality of the mobile plant on the territory of Pirot.
The conference concluded with a round table discussion focused on local and regional CDW processing, emphasizing the role of public-private cooperation, civil society, and policy alignment in creating effective circular solutions.
