GBS-Infrastructural Construction, a division of the Glavbolgarstroy corporate group, has commenced the construction of a sizable outdoor parking lot at Sofia Airport. Covering a total area of 25,000 square meters, it will accommodate nearly 1,000 parking spaces for travelers. The parking facility will also feature designated spots for electric cars equipped with adjacent charging stations. Completion of the project is anticipated by this fall.
Emil Angelov, CEO and Deputy Chairman of the Management Board of Glavbolgarstroy Holding, Jesus Caballero, CEO of SOF Connect - the operator of Sofia Airport, Deputy Minister of Transport and Communications Anna Natova, and Mayor of Slatina District Georgi Iliev participated in the ground-breaking ceremony held near Terminal 2.
"In the upcoming six months, the GBS-Infrastructure Construction team will diligently work to transform this section of Sofia Airport, making it capable of accommodating 1,050 cars in the near future. This project encompasses more than just parking spaces. It involves the construction of a new road, installation of charging stations for electric vehicles, implementation of advanced pass mode installations capable of reading license plates, a substantial enhancement in admission control. All innovative aspects of constructing such a facility will be realized," stated Emil Angelov, CEO and Deputy Chairman of the Management board s of Glavbolgarstroy Holding.
"The outdoor parking project holds significant importance for us and is integral to the modernization and expansion plans for Sofia Airport. Following the completion of the outdoor parking, we will proceed with the renovation of the covered parking at Terminal 2. Upon completion of these initiatives, passengers will have access to approximately 1,800 parking spaces," emphasized Jesus Caballero.
Furthermore, an access control system will be deployed at Terminal 2, capable of recognizing license plates. This system will ensure swift access for drivers dropping off or picking up passengers, thereby reducing waiting times, and will regulate access for unauthorized taxis to the parking area.
