Glavbolgarstroy at the AmCham Bulgaria forum: Long-term planning and infrastructure development will ensure reliable energy, regional stability and competitiveness

How can businesses strike a balance between complying with EU regulations while enhancing their economic value and competitiveness, and what path should companies follow to develop their workforce in a dynamic economic environment?

These and other questions were addressed by Emil Angelov, Chief Executive Officer of Glavbolgarstroy Holding, during the panel discussion “Foundations for a Sustainable and Resilient Future” at the conference “Vision 2050: Building Bulgaria’s Competitiveness Through the Global Future”. The event, organized by the American Chamber of Commerce in Bulgaria, marked the organization’s 30th anniversary.

“Without proper strategic planning, we cannot achieve regional stability. Fortunately, here in Bulgaria, we have excellent examples of projects of regional importance — such as the construction of Units 7 and 8 of the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant and the Vertical Gas Corridor. Both initiatives are being implemented by Glavbolgarstroy and are of key strategic significance for the development of the region,” emphasized Angelov during the discussion, which also included representatives from Westinghouse, Kozloduy NPP – New Build, and Dundee Precious Metals Krumovgrad.

“Such projects will not only contribute to regional stability but will also enhance competitiveness. Long-term strategic initiatives like these are vital because they ensure more reliable energy supplies, attract additional market participants, stimulate competition, and help lower prices. The development of infrastructure — particularly energy infrastructure — strengthens stability, builds competitiveness, and reduces costs,” Angelov noted.

According to the CEO, Bulgaria is currently in a strong position thanks to its full membership in the Schengen Area and its upcoming accession to the Eurozone. However, without the necessary infrastructure — port, rail, energy, and road — the country cannot fully capitalize on these advantages.

“People, goods, and services cannot move without developed infrastructure. We need strategic planning and active construction efforts so that Bulgaria can establish itself as a regional player,” he concluded.

The event brought together leading experts, leaders, and international partners of the Chamber to discuss the key challenges and opportunities that will shape Bulgaria’s development in the coming decades. Discussions focused on topics such as the country’s economic growth, the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in advancing energy and transport infrastructure, and how these factors influence progress across the Southeast European region.
