The plant for recycled construction materials welcomed a group of children

The newly inaugurated recycled construction materials plant of Glavbolgarstroy opened its doors to nearly 50 students from the 125th “Boyan Penev” Secondary School in Sofia. The children from classes 2B and 4D were introduced firsthand to the recycling process of construction and demolition waste, and how it is transformed into materials that can be reintegrated into the construction cycle. They learned why selective demolition is important—so that as many of the remaining elements as possible can be reused.

The children met with the company’s team, who explained the main ingredients used in concrete production and their origins. Alongside the valuable knowledge, the children had fun giving playful nicknames to the equipment they encountered—such as calling the concrete crusher and rebar separator “The Tyrannosaurus,” and dubbing the screening and washing installation “The Giant Spider.”

The facility was built under the MOBICCON-PRO project—an international research initiative in the field of circular economy in construction, funded by the Horizon Europe, the EU’s largest public funding programme for research and innovation.

The project is developed by a consortium of 10 European organizations, led by the Bulgarian construction holding company. The consortium includes partners from France, Belgium, Denmark, Bulgaria, and Serbia, including leading universities, research institutions, technology and sectoral organizations, local authorities, and others. Its goal is to develop, implement, and demonstrate the effectiveness of a circular system solution for construction waste management and the production of high-grade recycled construction products and materials.

The initiative aims to promote a comprehensive approach to the treatment of inert waste by using it as a resource and reintroducing it into the construction process and the market. The plant is equipped with various technologies, including prototypes and innovative solutions for crushing, screening, precise separation, and purification through flotation. These technologies support the production of high-quality secondary and innovative construction products and materials.
