Nature of works
Elaboration of detailed design and construction of: “Modernization of road І-8 Kalotina – Hrabarsko road junction from km 15+500 to km 32+447.20 and phased connections”. This is the section between Dragoman and Slivnitsa, with a length of 16.98 km.
The project envisages widening of the existing road up to 27 m, thus turning the two-lane first-class road into a four-lane road. Its geometric elements will be improved in some sections for the achievement of a design speed of 110 km/h. The term for implementation is 910 calendar days.
I-8 road is part of the core Trans-European Transport Network. It is part of the route London – Budapest – Belgrade – Sofia – Plovdiv – Istanbul – Calcutta, which is the shortest road connecting Western Europe with the Middle East. The section Kalotina – Sofia Border Checkpoint provides a connection to the Orient/East-Mediterranean Trans-European Corridor.
The modernization of the road section will improve the cross-border connection between Bulgaria and Serbia and the completeness of the West-East motorway network on Bulgarian territory. With the construction of the section, travel time will be reduced and comfortable and safe driving conditions will be guaranteed.
